Message from WFOT Executive 15 November 2001:
What is happening around the world?
Many events have taken place during the past
few months in different areas of the world.
Over 80 delegates from 16 countries attended
the OTARG African Region Congress held in Uganda in July.
This was so successful that plans are already underway for
the next congress in Mombasa in 2003!
Representatives of the countries in Europe
– The Council of Occupational Therapists for the European
Countries / COTEC, met in Helsinki in September. This was
one of two meetings held regularly each year and business
included plans for the next European congress in the autumn
of 2004.
Similarly, there are plans to hold the next
Asia Pacific congress in Singapore and the 2006 WFOT Congress
in Malaysia.
Member countries in the Americas have also
met. Two further countries are seeking WFOT membership and
are preparing their submission with the assistance of a working
group headed by the Chilean delegate.
At this time, the Executive, on behalf of
the WFOT express our sympathy to our colleagues in the United
States following the tragic events in September. Because of
the uncertainties of travel, Executive members did not attend
the Rehabilitation International Assembly in Lebanon and this
meant that the intended meeting in the Middle East was cancelled.
It is hoped that this can take place at some future date.
WFOT is a non political organisation, but we do not condone
terrorism and would express our support for colleagues working
in difficult circumstances at this time.
Ongoing work
Work continues in the different Programme Areas
of WFOT and we are always needing people to participate and
to undertake tasks. Look at the program areas and if you think
you can help, contact your country delegate or the Programme
Co-ordinator of the area that interests you. We can never have
too many volunteers!
An opportunity not to miss
We are now looking ahead to WFOT 2002 – the
Congress in Stockholm. The Federation held its first meeting
in Stockholm in 1952, with 10 founder member associations.
We now have 55 member associations and abstracts have been
received from 65 countries – a sign of the development of
the profession internationally.
International congresses are a wonderful way
to meet colleagues and learn about issues and developments
in occupational therapy around the world. Join us for what
will truly be a celebration of 50 years of the Federation.
We look forward to meeting you! And if you are not already
an individual member of WFOT – join now!
